Minimally Invasive Robotic Laparoscopic Surgery

Robotic surgery is the latest advance in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. It is ideally suited for cancer surgery, especially the curative treatment of uterine and cervical cancer. Surgeries which required a four day hospital recovery in the past can now be done with an overnight stay. Robotic surgery is done using minimal skin incisions. The risk of major complications such as infection, blood loss, and transfusion are decreased. Robotic surgery has unmatched precision and control. The surgeon views the operative field in three dimensions. This creates major advantages over standard laparoscopic surgery. Complex procedures can be accomplished while preserving the accuracy, radicality, and high cure rate associated with standard open surgical approaches. In addition, certain procedures for benign gynecologic problems are ideally suited for robotic surgery, including removal of fibroids and surgery for difficult endometriosis.

The greatest advantage of the system is better visualization of the surgical area using a robotically controlled camera arm. With excellent magnification and precise three dimensional binocular optics, tissue planes and blood vessels are more easily seen. Tiny instruments controlled by the surgeon can perform intricate tasks faster than traditional surgical or laparoscopic techniques. Complex operations can be accomplished with greatly reduced tissue trauma.
